Protecting the skin on the residual limb is very important. Sometimes friction between a silicone liner and the residual limb will cause unwanted abrasion, blisters, and discomfort. We have discovered a simple way to reduce the friction especially while engaging in sporting activities. After some experimentation we found that placing a stretchy tape (Hypafix®) on the residual limb before donning the silicone liner works well to prevent the friction that may cause abrasion.
In this case Hypafix® was placed on the residual upper limb before this individual participated in a karate class. Here are the steps that we took. Apply the Hypafix® tape in strips (as below) so it conforms to the shape of the residual limb. Don the liner and prosthesis as usual. After the activity discard the tape and wash the liner and residual limb.
Any friction that occurs will be between the Hypafix® tape and the liner thereby protecting the skin of the residual limb. This can be a game changer for amputees who partake in sports or vigorous activities.
This method could be effective for upper or lower limb amputations.
